This is an introductory course for those who want to find out whether a career in the automotive industry will really suit them. It is ideally suited for students who aspire to apprenticeships in the motor industry and related fields. The course aim is to provide students with a thorough grounding in motor vehicle maintenance practices.
This course will enable students to locate, identify and carry out routine maintenance on a variety of mechanical and electrical components, as well as develop life skills including effective communication techniques, teamwork and independent learning.

Course content may be revised for educational or organisational reasons.
Grade D in five subjects in the Department of Education and Skills Junior Certificate Examination or equivalent qualification. Mature students are most welcome to apply. Minimum age 16.

- Heavy Vehicle Mechanics
On successful completion of the course students are prepared for employment, including employment in the motor technology industry and will provide opportunities to work in various aspects of the auto trade.
Alexander Fazylov
Alexander Fazylov is a past student of Plunket College of Further Education QQI Level 5 Pre-Apprenticeship Motor Vehicle Maintenance course.
Alexander completed his work experience placement with Irish Commercials in Santry, Dublin. Alexander said the placement gave him a real insight into the workings of a HGV workshop, learning about all the various aspects of the job which he might not have otherwise considered. Alexander also said he felt very welcomed by all the staff in Irish Commercials and learned a huge amount from the qualified mechanics there.
Alexander graduated in June 2021 with a Full QQI Level 5 Award in Motor Technology, on completion of the course he successfully secured a HGV apprenticeship with Irish Commercials, who are the main importers and distributors for Volvo, Trucks & Buses in Ireland.
